Booking A Consultation

Our process for a consultation is as follows:

  • You reach out to us through the contact form on this website with your name, contact information, and brief information about your issue(s).

  • Our staff will contact you to discuss in slightly more detail and provide to you our intake information inclusive of the Law Society of Ontario’s Verification of Identity form and our comprehensive questionnaire.

  • Our staff will confirm a date and time for you to meet with a lawyer. You provide the consultation fee by e-transfer in order to secure the consultation time. The e-transfer is accepted when the consultation occurs.

Schedule a consultation by emailing us at info@alveslaw.ca or using our convenient intake form above.

When our staff reach out to you, we will be providing forms to fill out, including the Law Society of Ontario’s Verification of Identity form, and our family law questionnaire, and will request from you the proof of identity documents required by the Law Society of Ontario.

After receiving your email or form, our office will be in touch to schedule a consultation at a convenient time for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer free consultations?

No, we do not offer free consultations. We charge for consultations but at a reduced rate from the lawyers’ standard hourly rate. The consultation fee at our office is $226.00 (HST included).

Can I meet with a lawyer virtually?

Yes. Our lawyers are available to meet with you virtually or in-person at our offices.

How long are consultations?

Our consultations last for up to one hour.

So your rates are $200.00/hour + tax?

Our consultations are offered at a reduced rate. Our hourly fees are higher and depend
on which lawyer is providing services.

Can I book multiple consultations?

No. Our consultations, and the flat rate, can only be used once. If you need further legal
assistance, you will have to sign a retainer with one of our lawyers.

What’s a retainer?

Retainer funds are a means of engaging the lawyer’s services. It’s like a pre-paid credit card. You provide retainer funds and as the firm conducts work, that work is paid from the retainer funds. When the funds get low, a top up is required. If the funds aren’t all used, they’re returned to you.

Please note: the initial retainer funds request is not a quote for how much it will cost to finalize your legal matters.

A retainer agreement is a contract between the firm and the client detailing the legal services the firm will provide, and the corresponding fees the client will pay in exchange for those services.

I’m filling out your questionnaire, why do you need so much information just for a consultation?

Our questionnaire is comprehensive for two reasons.

Firstly, an hour is not a lot of time to get to know someone, get a sense of the legal issues, and begin discussing options. A questionnaire allows our lawyers to better serve you by spending more time during the consultation on substantive matters and less on figuring out what your situation is.

the lawyer conducting the consultation to have a brief sense of the issue(s) prior to the
The second reason is that it allows the client to prepare for the consultation. We recognize that, while our offices are professionals and engage in this type of work day in and day out, it is rare that a family law client has had to retain a family law lawyer before. The questionnaire serves as a guide to begin understanding the nature and scope of legal issues that arise in a family law file, and the need to share information to achieve the desired result in a family law matter.

Do you accept Legal Aid as payment?

We are not currently accepting new Legal Aid clients.

My situation is high conflict/difficult, how aggressive are your lawyers?

Our lawyers work to find resolutions outside of litigation to save time, cost, and maintain relationships as much as possible. That said, we are fully prepared to take an aggressive stance when necessary. Our lawyers are not only skilled negotiators but also fierce litigators who are ready to fight for your interests in court if required. We believe in a balanced approach, combining assertiveness with diplomacy, to ensure your interests are protected while minimizing potential risks.
